Chideock Champignons was founded in late 2018 by Chris Gassion and Nick Phillips, two Chideockions who are fascinated by fungus. Both having a deep-rooted passion for all things that grow, they met by chance in a pub around 5 years ago.
Chris stated: ‘Mushrooms? There’s nothing I don’t know I don’t know about mushrooms!’ It didn’t take long for a friendship to grow.
Last year, Gate Farm Dairy, the current CC HQ became available and Chris approached Nick with the intention of starting a mushroom farm. Thus Chideock Champignons was born, and has been growing steadily ever since.
Chris is originally from East Sussex but would holiday regularly in West Dorset from his youth to the day he moved to the area around seven years ago. Combing the fields and forests of his home area, Chris has a keen nose for truffles and can even smell them out in the forest. Chris also operates his own building contractors, Urban Improvements, and lives in Chideock with his partner Kerry and there three children.
Nick was raised in Chideock before leaving to live in Chester, Manchester, South Korea and London. His love for West Dorset never waned and always wanted to come back to be free in the captivating countryside of his youth. Roaming feral from a young age, the Golden Cap estate was his playground and he would often be out scanning the ground for living things. When living in London 9 years ago, his passion for fungi grew and he yearned to return and start a business based around his passion – mushrooms. He now lives in Chideock once more and does not regret being back one bit.
